Kingfisher Restaurant
WAV Architects
Kingfisher Restaurant blends the bold flavors of Louisiana with the laid-back coastal charm of Fairhope, Alabama. A renovation began on an existing commercial building in order to make it into the ideal low country restaurant with a variety of dining experiences. Blending Louisiana culture with that of a unique coastal town included also blending a multitude of design styles. While a coastal color palette is present throughout the restaurant with earth tones, blues, and whites, depending on the room the customer is seated in, the customer can have a completely different dining experience. This is true for the industrial inspired bar area and the wrap around porch and patio where you can find Fairhope’s famous bay breeze.
The details upon entry make diners feel at home from the wrap around porch to the natural materials found wherever possible.
Auburn University AG Heritage Park Pavilion
CMH Architects
As Auburn University expands, it was an honor to breathe new life into this campus landmark. Known to students as “The Red Barn,” this landmark is a constant reminder of the University’s agricultural roots. However, a need for the pavilion to function year round as an event space grew. This renovation included restroom additions; HVAC; a warming kitchen upgrades; and interior and exterior renovations including glass doors, a bar, and a stone fireplace. This creates an inviting event space for both campus events and public events.
The Pavilion sits on the water with a view of campus in the distance. The space blends versatile functionality with subtle rustic charm, making it an inviting backdrop for any Auburn event.
USA Health Mapp Family Campus
WAV Architects
The Mapp Family Campus Medical Office Building is a three-story, 50,000-square-foot facility located in Baldwin County, just across the bay from Mobile. The building brings a wide range of USA Health services closer to residents of the Eastern Shore, offering care that includes pediatrics, family medicine, and a variety of specialty services.
The building was designed to support both clinical care and community-focused wellness initiatives. In addition to exam and specialty care spaces, the facility includes a demonstration kitchen that allows providers to host healthy-eating classes and nutrition education programs. These programmatic elements create opportunities for patient engagement beyond traditional medical visits, supporting preventive care and promoting healthier lifestyles within the community.
Edgar’s Bakery: Homewood
CMH Architects
Neighboring a boutique hotel, Edgar’s Bakery, wanted an equally as chic building located in downtown Homewood, Alabama. However, it was currently an abandoned camera store that needed major renovations. The building is now unrecognizable in the best way, with the star of the show being a patio surrounded by laser cut metal panels and bookended with a stone fireplace. The signature Edgar’s striped awnings bring together these elements.
The interior required a full renovation including a kitchen, service areas, dining area, and store. Some of the exterior elements are brought inside, creating a cohesive design.
USA Health Pediatric Emergency Center
WAV Architects
An expansion to the Pediatric Emergency Center at USA Health’s Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama more than doubled the department’s size, increasing the facility from 9,000 to 19,000 square feet. The new center includes more than 30 treatment areas, including 25 private rooms, allowing the hospital to better accommodate the growing demand for specialized pediatric emergency care in the region and support approximately 40,000 patient visits each year.
Designed with a focus on both patient comfort and clinical efficiency, the space emphasizes a family-centered care environment. Interior design elements incorporate calming yet playful ocean-inspired imagery, soft lighting, and thoughtful pops of color to create a welcoming atmosphere for young patients. Sensory rooms and other supportive design features provide spaces for children who benefit from reduced stimulation, while expanded treatment areas allow parents and caregivers to remain close throughout the care process.
Alabaster Rec Center and Library
CMH Architects
Positioned as a “one-stop shop” for the community, this development includes an 84,000-square-foot recreation center, a 19,000-square-foot library, a renovated sports complex, and a third-party retail district. The master plan organizes these diverse programs into a cohesive civic campus that responds to the City’s needs while maximizing site efficiency. The design draws from an industrial palette, pairing durable materials and exposed structure with playful forms and color—primarily expressed in the interior spaces.
The recreation center features indoor courts, an indoor walking track, fitness spaces, concessions, and recreational aquatics amenities including party rooms and cabana-style locker rooms. A flexible multipurpose room connects to the library via a covered walkway, allowing both facilities to share community meeting space.
The new library nearly doubles the size of the existing facility and introduces modern elements such as a makerspace and an open layout that prioritizes clear sightlines and visual connectivity across public areas.
